01 / THE REGION

A kingdom shaped
by sea and court.

Fife's position between the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay created a region connected to royal movement, trade, religion and maritime defence. Its castle sites are rarely far from settlements or the coast, which makes the area easy to explore without losing the sense that water has always determined its routes and viewpoints.

St Andrews combines an episcopal stronghold with one of Scotland's most important historic towns. Aberdour preserves an exceptionally long architectural sequence, while Ravenscraig looks directly towards the Forth. Rosyth records a shoreline transformed by industry, and Inchcolm requires a boat journey to an island landscape shared by abbey, fortifications and seabirds. The variety is unusually strong for such a compact region.
