Choose the public place you want to photograph from, not the castle entrance. The cards below name the viewing area and describe the exterior view.

NO TICKET · STILL WORTH THE STOP
Castle views
that cost nothing.
THE EDITORIAL METHOD
Free view does not mean
unlimited access.
These choices are about publicly available exterior views, coastal paths, harbours, streets and roadside stops. Some castles are closed, private or ticketed beyond the viewpoint. The value lies in seeing the building in its landscape without pretending access is broader than it is.
A free view does not imply free parking, toilets or access across a bridge. Check the castle guide for parking and follow signs at the viewing area.
The suggested time is for a short exterior stop, not an interior tour. Allow more for the approach, weather and photography; coastal stops need a flexible plan.
EIGHT FREE EXTERIOR VIEWS
Eight places to enjoy the view without a ticket.
01Edinburgh Castle
Look up to Castle Rock from Princes Street. This is an exterior city view; royal rooms and crown jewels require a separate castle visit.
02Dunnottar Castle
Use the clifftop approach from the car park for the exterior view. The operator describes about 300 metres of relatively level earth path to the clifftop; entering the castle is a separate ticketed visit.
03Eilean Donan Castle
Frame the castle and bridge from the public waterfront in Dornie. A view from the village does not include admission to the castle island or bridge.
04Castle Stalker
Enjoy the island tower from the mainland viewing area near Appin. Stay on signed public routes; this stop does not include a boat crossing or entry to the castle.
05Dunbar Castle
View the surviving walls from Dunbar Harbour. The harbour is the destination for this stop; the closed castle remains are not a walking route.
06Thurso Castle
Look towards the roofless castle from the river mouth and coastal walking area. Keep this an exterior-view stop rather than entering the ruined residence.
07Keiss Castle
Approach on the coastal path from Keiss for a view over Sinclair’s Bay. Allow for the walk, stay away from cliff edges and do not enter unstable ruins.
08Duntulm Castle
Use the coastal approach to appreciate the headland from a safe distance. Respect any closed paths or barriers; the fragile castle remains are not an interior visit.
